The Mutation's Grip: Unnatural Forms

The town of Blackridge had always been a quiet place, a sleepy little settlement surrounded by thick forests and mist-covered hills. But lately, something was different. People were disappearing. Strange figures lurked in the shadows. Whispers of unnatural changes spread through the town like wildfire.

One such whisper had reached Alex Carter, a journalist known for uncovering hidden truths. His latest investigation had led him to the abandoned research facility on the outskirts of town. The building was shrouded in darkness, its windows shattered, its walls covered in ominous graffiti.

Ring! Ring!

Alex’s phone vibrated in his pocket. He pulled it out and glanced at the screen. Unknown number.

He hesitated before answering. “Hello?”

A raspy voice responded, “You shouldn’t be here.”

His heart skipped a beat. “Who is this?”

“Get out before it finds you.”

The line went dead.

Alex swallowed hard, his breath coming faster. He had heard enough urban legends about this place. But he wasn’t one to back down from a story.

He pushed the heavy metal doors open and stepped inside. The stench of decay filled the air. Flashing his flashlight across the ruined interior, he saw rusted equipment, overturned tables, and files scattered across the floor.

Then he heard it—a low, guttural growl.

Alex spun around, his flashlight beam cutting through the darkness. Something moved in the shadows. A shape—large, misshapen, its limbs too long, its skin shifting as if alive.

“Who’s there?” he demanded.

The creature stepped into the light. Its face—if it could be called that—was a grotesque fusion of human and something else entirely. A sickening combination of flesh and unnatural mutation.

Alex staggered back, his mind racing.

“Help me...” the creature croaked, its voice an agonizing whisper.

His blood ran cold.

Before he could react, the lights flickered, and the air grew heavy. More figures emerged from the darkness—twisted, deformed, and reaching out toward him.

Alex turned and ran.

But the mutation’s grip had already tightened around him.

His breath came in ragged gasps as he darted down the narrow corridor, his flashlight flickering. The hallway twisted and turned, like a living maze shifting around him. Every door he tried was locked, rusted shut, or led to nothing but darkness.

Behind him, the creatures followed, their distorted bodies scraping against the walls. Their voices murmured in a language he couldn’t understand, their grotesque forms contorting in unnatural ways.

Alex spotted a rusted stairwell at the end of the hall. He sprinted toward it, pushing himself harder. His foot hit the first step just as something grabbed his ankle.

“No!” he shouted, kicking frantically.

A skeletal hand with fused fingers tightened its grip, pulling at him with unnatural strength. He twisted, slamming the flashlight against the hand. The creature shrieked, recoiling, giving Alex just enough time to scramble up the stairs.

He reached the top and slammed the door behind him, throwing his weight against it. The muffled growls echoed from the other side. His pulse pounded in his ears.

Taking a shaky breath, he turned to find himself in a vast laboratory. Broken glass crunched beneath his feet. Computers lined the walls, their screens flashing distorted images of human test subjects—people transformed into horrific, inhuman forms.

“What the hell happened here?” Alex whispered.

A thick, yellowed file lay open on a desk. He stepped closer, scanning its contents.

“Project Genesis. Genetic experimentation. Subject 042—escaped. Symptoms: extreme mutation, increased aggression, rapid cellular evolution...”

The door behind him rattled.

Alex’s hands trembled as he flipped through the pages. The final report detailed an experiment gone wrong, a failed attempt to manipulate DNA for accelerated healing. Instead, it created monstrosities.

The rattling stopped.

Silence.

Then, a voice.

“You read too much.”

Alex froze. The voice wasn’t human. It slithered through the air, dripping with malice.

Slowly, he turned.

The largest creature yet loomed before him. Towering, its form constantly shifting, its flesh bubbling and reforming. A grotesque amalgamation of failed experiments.

It lunged.

Alex dove to the side as the monstrous being crashed into the desk, sending papers flying. He grabbed a metal pipe from the floor and swung with all his strength. The pipe connected, but the creature barely flinched.

He needed another way out.

His eyes darted to the emergency exit sign glowing in the distance. If he could make it—

The creature roared and charged.

Alex bolted. His legs burned as he sprinted across the lab. The ground trembled under the weight of his pursuer. His fingers grazed the door handle just as something sharp slashed his shoulder.

He screamed in pain, crashing through the exit door and tumbling outside. Rain poured down in sheets, washing away the blood trickling down his arm.

Gasping, he stumbled forward, his vision swimming. Behind him, the creature howled, its voice lost in the storm.

He didn’t stop running until he reached the edge of town.

The research facility loomed in the distance, its dark silhouette barely visible through the rain.

Alex knew one thing for certain.

The mutation’s grip extended beyond those walls.

And it wasn’t finished with him yet.
